Dealing with Dementia
In Wisconsin alone, there are over 110,000 senior citizens living with Alzheimer's Disease and many more seniors who suffer from other types of dementia. In order to address this growing issue and to more effectively respond to individuals with dementia, all Fitchburg Police Department personnel have been trained to recognize and respond to persons suffering from dementia.
The training is a component of the Dementia Friendly Community Fitchburg initiative to ensure those with dementia in the City of Fitchburg feel safe and empowered to continue being contributing members of the community. Fitchburg Senior Center staff along with representatives from the Alzheimer's Association South Central Wisconsin and the Wisconsin Department of Justice Silver Alert program provided the training.
Members of the Fitchburg Police Department work cooperatively with personnel from the Fitchburg Senior Center and other service providers to address concerns related to individuals in the community who are dealing with dementia related issues.
Care Trak
The Dane County Sheriff's Office participates in a program called Care Trak. The program is designed to assist individuals with a history of wandering. Individuals are outfitted with a transmitter that can be tracked in the event an individual goes missing.

Silver Alert
The State of Wisconsin maintains a "Silver Alert" program to quickly share information regarding missing older adults who have Alzheimer's, dementia or other cognitive impairments. When local law enforcement agencies respond to calls involving missing adults who have Alzheimer's, dementia or other cognitive impairments, information is gathered and then disseminated state-wide through a variety of outlets including social media, electronic billboards and even lottery machine terminals.
