Curry Court Shooting (Thursday Update)

Update (9/30 3:30 p.m.):

After continued investigation and additional consultation with the Dane County District Attorney’s Office, the 15-year-old in custody has now been booked into the Dane County Juvenile Reception Center on a tentative charge of Homicide by Negligent Handling of a Dangerous Weapon.  The investigation into the circumstances of the shooting remains open and active.

The Fitchburg Police Department recognizes the community’s desire to learn more about this tragic incident. Because of the open status of this case and future proceedings in the juvenile justice system, we currently cannot confirm some information or share additional details. Resources remain committed to completing the investigation to the fullest extent possible. As the investigation continues, additional pieces of information could be made available for public release.

Any future updates will be made available through our traditional media release and social media channels. 

Update (9/29 1:15 p.m.):

Around 9:35 p.m. on Tuesday, September 28, 2021, Fitchburg Police officers and emergency medical personnel responded to an apartment in the 5100 block of Curry Court for a report of a person who had been shot.  The victim, an 11-year-old girl, was transported to a local hospital, where she was pronounced deceased.

A 15-year-old was taken into custody and transported to the Dane County Jail where he was booked on a tentative charge of 1st Degree Reckless Homicide.

This investigation remains open. There is no further information available for release at this time.

The Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office is continuing its investigation and the victim’s name will not be released at this time.

Update (9/29 5:45 a.m.):

A subject, who was at the scene when officers first arrived, is in custody for their involvement in this incident. No additional suspects are being sought. 

Additional information will be provided this afternoon.

No further updates are available at this time. 

Original Release:

Around 9:35 p.m. on Tuesday, September 28, 2021, Fitchburg Police officers and emergency medical personnel responded to an apartment in the 5100 block of Curry Court for a report of a person who had been shot.  The victim was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. Investigating personnel are not seeking a suspect, and there is no ongoing threat to public safety related to this incident. 

The investigation remains open and active and there is no other information for release at this time.
