Release Date: 8/7/2023
Incident Number: FP23-16552 & FP23-16560
Details:
On Monday, August 7, 2023, Fitchburg Officers investigated two separate motor vehicle versus bicycle accidents within the City of Fitchburg.
At around 5:50 a.m., the first crash occurred at the intersection of McKee Road and Nesbitt Road. A vehicle was turning onto McKee Road from a stop sign at the same time a bicyclist was traveling across the intersection in the designated crosswalk. The driver did not see the bicycle before turning and struck the bicyclist. The bicyclist was transported to an area hospital to be evaluated for apparent minor injuries.
At around 9:00 a.m., the second crash occurred at the intersection of County Highway MM and Byrne Road. The bicyclist was stopped at a stop sign on Byrne Road when the driver of the vehicle turned onto Byrne Road from County Highway MM. The driver made too sharp of a turn, causing them to first travel into the the wrong lane, resulting in the crash. The bicyclist suffered a possible broken wrist as a result and was transported to an area hospital for treatment.
The drivers in both incidents will be issued citations for Failure to Yield Right of Way and conducting an Improper Turn.
In light of these and other similar crashes having recently occurred in the area, the Fitchburg Police Department is urging both motorists and bicyclists to be more cautious and observant of their surroundings to help prevent future accidents.
