[ARCHIVED] UPDATED - Library Closure

In response to Governor Tony Evers’ orders to close all K-12 schools and prohibiting large gatherings, the Fitchburg Public Library will close at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 15, and will remain closed at least through Sunday, April 5. The situation will be reevaluated daily and we will provide further updates if plans change.

This decision was not made lightly. The scientific community agrees that "social distancing" is an important factor in preventing the spread of COVID-19. While we value serving as a community gathering space, at this time that is precisely what we should not be doing. The library is taking this precautionary step on behalf of the patrons, staff, and the community during this pandemic.

During the closure, patrons are asked to not return items, as the book drop will be locked. The library will be extending due dates on all materials for the convenience of all. The Fitchburg Public Library is a fine free library, so no need to worry about overdue fees.

While the physical library will be closed, the digital library resources are available on the website,, including eBooks, eAudiobooks, and research databases.  This would be a great time to learn a language using Transparent Languages, or to read a book checked out from Overdrive.

The safety of the patrons and staff is of highest importance for the library. Please follow the library on social media (Facebook and Twitter) and check the website for updates. Further information will be provided as the situation continues to evolve and develop. Your understanding is appreciated during this uncertain time. The Fitchburg Library looks forward to serving you in the future.
