Shortly before 10:00 am on Tuesday, December 8, Dane County Public Safety Communications (911) notified the Fitchburg Fire Department of a possible commercial structure fire at True Coffee Roasters on the 5300 block of King James Way in the City of Fitchburg.

An employee of True Coffee called 911 stating that one of their roasters on the main production line had caught fire.

Fitchburg Car 1 was the first arriving unit and reported smoke coming from the chimney. Madison Engine 7 was the first arriving fire suppression crew. They entered the building and were able to extinguish the fire with a dry chemical fire extinguisher. The fire was confirmed completely extinguished less than 10 minutes after crews were paged out.

“The City of Fitchburg was previously in an automatic aid agreement with the Town of Madison Fire Department for structure fire responses. With Madison Fire recently assuming fire and EMS responsibilities for the Town of Madison, Fitchburg Fire is now requesting assistance from Madison Fire, based on closest available unit for structure fire responses,” explained Fitchburg Fire Chief Joe Pulvermacher.

A large amount of smoke was produced by the fire. Due to the size and layout of the building ventilation took almost an hour. Fortunately, the fire was contained to the roasting container where it started. The inside of the building did not sustain any smoke damage so once fire crews were finished and returned the building over to True Coffee, all employees were able to safely return to work.

The Fitchburg Fire Department received automatic aid from the Fitchburg Police Department, FitchRona EMS, the Verona Fire Department and the City of Madison Fire Department. No injuries were reported at the scene.

All personnel who were inside the building at the time of the fire were able to evacuate safely and no injuries were reported.
