At approximately 9:45 Saturday night, April 17, 2021, Dane County Public Safety Communications (911) notified the Fitchburg Fire Department of a structure fire on the 5300 block of Lacy Road in the City of Fitchburg. Multiple callers, including the residents of the property, reported seeing a lot of flames with the residents stating a detached garage was on fire.
The first arriving fire personnel confirmed that a detached garage was fully engulfed in flames. Because of the amount of fire that could be seen while approaching the scene, the Incident Commander escalated the response to the First Alarm Level through the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS). Requesting assistance through MABAS bring additional personnel and apparatus to the scene as well as personnel to staff the Fitchburg Fire Station if needed to respond to other calls in the City.
Both occupants of the nearby house were able to evacuate safely, and they were able to confirm to arriving personnel that no one else was inside the house and that only a vehicle was still in the garage.
Crews were able to extinguish the fire within 15 minutes of first arriving on scene and no injuries were reported. Because the fire was contained to the detached garage, the residents were not displaced.
Assistance was received from the Fitchburg Police Department, FitchRona EMS, Madison Fire Department, and the Verona Fire Department, Oregon Area Fire/EMS, McFarland Fire Department, and Maple Bluff Fire Department.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by Fitchburg Fire Investigators.
