Recent Property Crime & Crime Prevention Tips
8/6/21
Over the last week, we have investigated several property crimes, primarily in the Seminole Hills Estates and Highlands of Seminole Neighborhoods. Most, if not all, of these crimes involved unlocked doors, open garages, or keys left in a car.
We recognize life is busy and full of distractions. No matter where you live, please consider establishing a nightly crime prevention routine:
✓ Lock cars parked outside after removing garage door openers and valuables
✓ Make sure your garage door is closed
✓ Remove keys and fobs from vehicles
✓ Conduct a key/fob "audit" to ensure they are all accounted for inside
✓ Lock the door from the garage into your home
✓ Check exterior doors and windows and verify they are locked
We also strongly encourage you to inventory your financial cards and other items of value that you keep in your wallet, purse, or car. While it's always best to remove these items from your car, an inventory, including account/serial numbers, will be helpful if items are lost or stolen. Save contact information for your card issuer/financial institution and in the event they are lost or stolen, cancel them immediately.
Our officers are spending their available time in our neighborhoods and checking on open garage doors overnight. We recognize no one likes to be woken up by a late night knock at the door from an officer but we would rather wake you up and prevent a crime than come to your home to take a burglary report.
While we work with other agencies in Dane County to investigate these crimes, you remain our number one partner in preventing crime in Fitchburg. We appreciate your assistance in taking simple steps to prevent crime, looking out for your neighbors, and reporting suspicious activity.
