On Friday, September 3, 2021, around 4:35 p.m., Fitchburg police officers responded to the 5100 block of Anton Drive for an incident on a Badger School Bus carrying students from Verona High School. The driver initially believed shots had been fired but determined a student had ignited a firework on the bus. Responding officers learned the firework had exploded in the aisle of the bus.
The explosion from the firework caused minor burns to at least three students. Fitch-Rona EMS did not transport any students after assessing injuries on the scene. A representative from the Verona Area School District responded to the scene.
Investigating officers were able to identify the 15-year-old responsible for igniting the firework on the bus. He was taken into custody at his home and transported to the Dane County Juvenile Reception Center. The incident does not appear to have been intended to cause harm or injuries to others.
Officials from the Verona Area School District have contacted families of students who were on the bus and have sent a communication to all high school families regarding the incident. Investigating personnel have been working closely with representatives from the school district to address this incident and ensure the safety of all students. The investigation remains open, and no further information is available for release at this time.
