Details:
A Fitchburg man was arrested Thursday night after robbing a taxi cab driver in the 2400 block of Chalet Gardens Court. Trokon Karnga, 39, was booked into the Dane County Jail on tentative charges of armed robbery, negligent handling of burning material, and resisting/obstructing an officer. The Wisconsin Department of Corrections also placed a hold on Karnga for violating the rules of his probation.
The incident began around 10:45 p..m. Thursday when a cab driver called to report that a passenger had robbed him toward the end of the trip. According to the driver, the suspect, later identified as Karnga, pressed an object against the driver’s chest in a way that made him believe it was a weapon. The suspect took an iPad and the driver’s personal belongings from the car and ran away.
A Fitchburg officer was in the area when the cab driver called 911, and other officers set up a perimeter to contain the suspect. Officers tracked the stolen iPad and determined that Karnga had run into a wooded area off the Cannonball Path. A Madison Police Department unmanned aircraft system (drone) team and K9 Unit assisted with locating Karnga in the brush. As officers approached Karnga, he lit a bush on fire and ran from the officers again. He was apprehended a short time later.
No one was injured during the incident and the stolen property was recovered. Officers determined the implied weapon was not a firearm. In addition to the City of Madison Police Department, the Dane County Sheriff’s Office and Town of Madison Police Department also assisted at the scene.
