[ARCHIVED] Children Kept Safe During Fire Response

Ambulances and a Madison Metro bus were used to keep children and staff members from La Petite Academy in Fitchburg safe and warm this morning.

The Fitchburg Fire Department received a pre-alert for a structure fire at approximately 11:08 a.m. for La Petite Academy located at 5574 Lacy Road in Fitchburg. The fire department was notified that a furnace located in the basement of the building was on fire. The children and staff members were able to evacuate the building safely.

In order to protect the children, area ambulances and personal vehicles were used until Madison Metro arrived at the location. Once the children were all accounted for and moved onto the Madison Metro bus, they were transported to the Fitchburg Library so they could be picked up by parents.

Maintenance person on-scene was transported to a local hospital for some smoke inhalation.

The Verona Fire Department, Town of Madison Fire Department, FitchRona EMS and Madison Metro assisted the Fitchburg Fire Department during this event. The Fitchburg Police Department also temporarily rerouted traffic on Lacy Road near the intersection of South Fish Hatchery Road while responders were working and the children and staff members were being moved.
